LampScout / Australian desk lamp guide
Good light.
Better desk.
Less guesswork.
Best Desk Lamps in Australia: a practical shortlist for work, study and the book you keep meaning to finish.
The best desk lamp is one you can aim at your work without shining it into your eyes or reflecting it in your screen. Start with the space you have, then choose the reach, brightness and controls that suit your task.

Our quick recommendation: consider the IKEA TERTIAL when you have a sturdy desk edge and want an adjustable clamp lamp. The NÄVLINGE suits a small, warm-lit reading corner. BenQ’s e-Reading lamp is worth comparing for a wide work surface, while the ScreenBar Pro suits a monitor-first setup.
This is a research-based buying guide using published manufacturer specifications. We have not hands-on tested these lamps. The lifestyle images illustrate desk setups and do not show the shortlisted models. The links below are ordinary manufacturer links.
Four different desks / four starting points
Best desk lamps in Australia
No single design suits every desk. These choices cover four common needs, with trade-offs you can check before spending money. Prices and availability change, so use the linked Australian product pages for the current offer.
| Lamp | Best fit | Published light specification | Check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| TERTIAL | Clamp / adjustable reach | Depends on your E27 bulb | Desk edge and bulb choice |
| NÄVLINGE | Small reading corner | 220 lm / 2700 K | Modest output, fixed colour |
| BenQ e-Reading | Wide work surface | 1600 lux at centre | Exact variant and footprint |
| ScreenBar Pro | Monitor-based desk | Over 1000 lux at centre | Monitor mounting compatibility |
Lumens and lux measure different things. The numbers above cannot be used as a direct brightness ranking across these lamps.
Make room for your work
What kind of lamp fits your desk?
A tiny base can help on a narrow desk. A clamp frees the surface completely. A wider beam makes more sense when a notebook, keyboard and reference book all need light at once.
This finder recommends a lamp format, using your answers. It does not predict measured light levels.
The researched shortlist

before the big purchase.
Shortlist / 01
IKEA TERTIAL
A budget clamp lamp for a usable desk edge
Why it makes the shortlist
The articulated arm lets you bring the light towards a notebook, then move it out of the way. IKEA lists a clamp opening of up to 60 mm and an E27 bulb fitting. The bulb is sold separately, so the brightness and colour depend on what you put in it.
Before you buy
Check the edge thickness, the space underneath it and whether the clamp can sit flat. A bevelled edge or a shallow shelf can make a clamp awkward. The listed cord length is 1.5 metres.
Shortlist / 02
IKEA NÄVLINGE
A compact lamp for a small reading or study corner
Why it makes the shortlist
This is the modest option: IKEA lists 220 lumens and warm white light at 2700 K. Its 12 cm base takes little desk space, and the narrow head is easy to aim at a book. The listed power draw is 1.9 W, with a 2 metre cord.
Before you buy
The output and fixed warm colour suit close reading better than spreading light across a large drawing surface. IKEA describes the light source as built in but replaceable; check the replacement instructions before buying.
Shortlist / 03
BenQ e-Reading Desk Lamp
A premium option for a wider work surface
Why it makes the shortlist
BenQ lists a 90 cm lighting width at at least 500 lux and 1600 lux at the centre for this lamp series. Colour temperature runs from 2700 K to 5700 K. Paper and screen modes, plus automatic dimming, suit a desk that changes between handwritten work and computer use.
Before you buy
These are manufacturer measurements, not our measurements. Coverage changes with lamp height and position. Compare the exact Australian variant, its footprint and its current price before ordering.
Shortlist / 04
BenQ ScreenBar Pro
A monitor-mounted option when desk space is tight
Why it makes the shortlist
A monitor light leaves the work surface clear. BenQ lists more than 1000 lux at the centre, with 500 lux across an 85 × 50 cm area. The Pro offers 16 brightness levels, eight colour temperature settings and an ultrasonic sensor for automatic switching.
Before you buy
Check the mounting arrangement carefully. BenQ lists monitor thickness compatibility of 0.43–6.5 cm and curvature of 1000–1800 R. A webcam, unusual rear housing or top-mounted controls can still complicate the fit.
Brightness / colour / comfort
Three numbers worth understanding.
Lumens describe light output. Australia’s Energy Rating guidance recommends comparing lumens when buying a lamp. Watts describe power consumption, so a higher wattage alone does not tell you how useful the light will be.
Lux describes light reaching a surface. Lamp height, beam shape and distance all affect it. A bright spot in the middle of a desk is different from an evenly lit page. Ask where and how the manufacturer measured a quoted lux figure.
Kelvin describes the colour appearance. Lower numbers look warmer; higher numbers look cooler. Energy Rating gives examples of warm light at 2700 K, cool light at 4000 K and daylight at 5000 K. Colour rendering, described by CRI, is a separate matter.

2700 K / warm
A warm-looking pool of light for a relaxed reading corner.
Illustration only. Your screen cannot reproduce a lamp’s real colour appearance or colour rendering.
Start at a comfortable level with some room light on, then adjust the lamp while looking at the actual task. If the paper seems dazzling or you can see the LED directly, change the angle before simply increasing the brightness. Our warm versus cool desk light guide explores the colour choice in more detail.
Aim the beam at the work surface, with enough reach for the whole task.
Fix the angle first
Your desk setup matters as much as the lamp.
For handwriting, start with the lamp on the opposite side to your writing hand. That often reduces the shadow your hand casts over the line. Then move it until the head is outside your normal line of sight.
For computer work, check the screen from your usual seated position. A reflection you miss while standing can become obvious once you sit down. Tilt or shift the lamp until the bright patch disappears.
OSHA’s workstation guidance recommends arranging lighting to minimise glare from desk lamps, windows and overhead lights. SafeWork NSW also identifies glare and reflections as causes of visual discomfort.
Keep a gentle background light on when the room is dark. A desk lamp should help you see the task comfortably. Read our desk lamp placement guide for more setup examples.
A five-minute buying check
Measure before
you order.
- Mark the footprint. Put a piece of paper where the base will sit. Can you still move the mouse and open a notebook?
- Check reach. The lamp head should reach the work, with room to move as your task changes.
- Trace the cord. Include the route around the desk. A cable pulled tight is a poor fit.
- Check the Australian power connection. Confirm the supplied adaptor and plug, especially when comparing imported listings.
- Read the returns and warranty terms. Glare, button placement and mount stability are difficult to judge from a listing photo.
If the surface is crowded, compare clamp desk lamps. If most work happens at a screen, start with our monitor light bar versus desk lamp comparison.

A small appliance / a simple calculation
What does a desk lamp cost to run?
Enter the lamp’s rated power, your daily use and your electricity usage rate. This estimates energy charges only. It excludes supply charges, standby power and the purchase price.
estimated annual energy cost
18.25 kWh per year, based on 365 days of use.
The starting rate of 35 cents is an example, not an Australian average. Use the usage rate on your electricity bill. Formula: watts ÷ 1000 × hours per day × 365 × dollars per kWh.
How this guide was put together
Specifications, useful fits
and honest limits.
We selected formats that solve different desk problems, then checked Australian manufacturer pages for the features quoted here. We compared mounting, reach, published light output, controls and the practical checks a buyer can make at home.
We did not award numerical scores, conduct independent lux measurements or test long-term reliability. Manufacturer claims are labelled as such. These picks are starting points for comparison, rather than a claim that each beats every alternative on the market.
The strongest choice for you may be the simplest one that fits. A good mount and a controllable beam can matter more than an extra mode you never use. Browse the desk lamps hub for related guides.
Before you switch on
Desk lamp questions, answered.
What is the best desk lamp for studying?
Look for an adjustable head, enough reach to illuminate your page and controls you can use without interrupting your work. A clamp can help on a crowded desk. Choose a dimmable model if your room lighting changes throughout the day. Fit and glare control matter more than a study label on the box.
How many lumens should a desk lamp have?
There is no single lumen figure that guarantees a well-lit desk. Lumens describe total output, while the beam and distance determine how much reaches the page. Compare the coverage, check any stated measurement conditions and choose enough adjustment to reduce brightness when needed.
Is warm or cool light better?
Warm light can suit a relaxed reading corner. A neutral or cooler setting may suit daytime work, depending on the room and your preference. Adjustable colour temperature is useful if you use one desk for both. Avoid treating a particular Kelvin value as a guaranteed productivity or health benefit.
Can a monitor light replace a desk lamp?
It can illuminate the area in front of a compatible monitor while saving surface space. It is less flexible if you often work away from the screen or need light over a large drawing area. Check mounting compatibility and the beam’s coverage before deciding.
Should I choose a rechargeable desk lamp?
A rechargeable lamp is convenient when there is no nearby socket or you move between rooms. For a desk used for long sessions, check the runtime at the brightness you actually need, charging time and whether it works while charging. A low-brightness runtime claim does not tell you how long full output lasts.
Does a brighter lamp prevent eye strain?
More brightness is not automatically more comfortable. Glare and strong reflections can create discomfort. Adjust the direction, reduce reflections and use suitable background light. A desk lamp is a lighting tool, not a treatment for persistent symptoms.
